Simple, playful ways to build early math skills with materials you already have at home!

Preschool Math Fun

1. Snack Sorting

Goal: Sort by color, shape, or size
Materials: Crackers, cereal, fruit snacks
How to Play:
Ask your child to sort their snack by color or shape. Count how many are in each group.
“Which color has more? Which has fewer?”

2. Laundry Math

Goal: Classify and count
Materials: Socks, shirts, or towels
How to Play:
Match socks, sort clothes by color or size, and count how many of each you have.
“How many red shirts do we have?”

3. Toy Graphing

Goal: Organize and compare
Materials: Toy cars, blocks, or stuffed animals
How to Play:
Line up toys by type or color. Make a simple graph using paper or tape lines on the floor.
“Which row has the most?”

4. Shape Hunt

Goal: Recognize basic shapes
Materials: None!
How to Play:
Walk around your house finding shapes.
“The clock is a circle! The door is a rectangle!”

Kindergarten Math at Home

1. Roll and Build

Goal: Count and compare numbers
Materials: Dice, blocks (or LEGO)
How to Play:
Roll two dice, build a tower for each number, and compare which is taller.
“Which tower has more blocks?”

2. Number Line Hop

Goal: Understand number order
Materials: Paper and tape
How to Play:
Make a number line (0–10) on the floor with sticky notes. Call out numbers to hop to, or add/subtract small amounts.
“Start at 3 and hop 2 more — where did you land?”

3. Cooking Counts

Goal: Measure and estimate
Materials: Measuring cups, spoons, ingredients
How to Play:
Invite your child to measure ingredients or count items while cooking.
“We need 2 cups of flour — let’s count them!”

4. Nature Numbers

Goal: Compare quantities and patterns
Materials: Rocks, leaves, sticks
How to Play:
Collect nature items and group them. Try making patterns or counting totals.
“Leaf, stick, leaf, stick — what comes next?”

Grade One Math at Home

1. Card Game: Make 10

Goal: Fluency with addition
Materials: Deck of cards (use 1–10)
How to Play:
Lay out cards. Players look for two cards that make 10 (e.g., 6 + 4). Keep pairs until no more are left.
“How many ways can we make 10?”

2. Coin Challenge

Goal: Identify coins and add money
Materials: Real or play coins
How to Play:
Give your child a small pile of coins. Ask them to sort, count, and show certain totals.
“Can you make 25¢ three different ways?”

3. Build a Store

Goal: Practice addition and subtraction
Materials: Toys, sticky notes, pretend money
How to Play:
Set up a “store.” Each item gets a price (under $10). Take turns being the shopper and cashier!
“You bought a toy for $4 and a book for $3. How much is that altogether?”

4. Balance Challenge

Goal: Introduce equations and equality
Materials: Hanger or seesaw, small objects
How to Play:
Hang a few small items on each side. Explore what makes it “balanced.”
“Two blocks on one side = one car on the other — they’re equal!”

Family Connection Ideas

• Create a Math Journal to draw or write about what you built, counted, or measured.
  
  
• Take photos of your child’s math creations to share with their teacher!
  
  
• Play “Math Talk” games in the car —
  “If we have 4 people and 2 apples, how can we share them fairly?”

• Celebrate mistakes as learning moments: “That didn’t work — let’s try another way!”
